Cannabis Strains

Cannabis is a flowering herb that has four different types of subspecies: sativa, indica, hybrid and ruderalis. Each plant and strain is unique in it’s own way. They all have a different combination of flavors (sweet, earthy, pungent), terpenes (smell) and endocannabinoids (THC/CBD/CBG/CBN). For example, sativas are great used during the day as they help provide a cerbreal head high, euphoria and enhances energy and creativity.
Indicas are the opposite. Indicas are better for end of day/nighttime use as they give you more of a body high which can help you relax; it also helps with sleep and pain relief. Indica strains are known for their medicinal benefits.
Hybrids are usually a combination of sativa and indica genetics. Sometimes hybrids can be more sativa dominant or they can be more indica dominant, depending on their lineage, which means they can be the best of both worlds.
Ruderalis, also known as ‘auto-flower,’ is a smaller version of a plant, which is why most breeders don’t use them. Their genetics are built to produce a smaller version of a plant within a certain time frame (12-16 weeks) that may or may not have as many benefits because of its lack of potency. Ruderalis plants can be sativa, indica or hybrid.
I personally love indicas and indica-dominant hybrid strains. I use cannabis for it’s medicinal benefits, so I need more of a body high and relaxation. I encourage you to explore different subspecies and strains to find out what’s going to work best for you.
Just a little side note – Some strains vary in their physical traits due to environmental factors, which creates what’s called a phenotype. Even though it is the exact same strain, you will notice different tastes, medicinal benefits and overall looks. Many strains have phenotypes, but only some are recognized with their own strain name.
Also, when looking at strain genetics, sometimes you will notice not all of them have genetics that are known. This is because you can clone a female cannabis plant before flowering (known as the mother plant) and you won’t need a seed – you will have the exact same genetics as the mother plant. However, if you aren’t sure of the genetics of the mother plant, then you won’t have the genetics to create a seed of that strain.
